On June 4, 2021, Dr. Kyla Pitcher was appointed by President Andrew Hugine, Jr. to serve as nterim Vice President for Student Affairs at Alabama A&M University. A native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, she is a passionate advocate of student development and has invested nearly fifteen years in Higher Education. Some areas currently under her purview are Enrollment Management (Admissions, Financial Aid, Registrar), Residential Life and Housing, Judicial Affairs, Veterans Affairs and Disability Services, and Community College Relations and Global Initiatives, to name a few. Prior to her appointment, she served as Interim Associate Vice President for Student Affairs, overseeing Student Health and Wellness, Health and Counseling, and chairing the University’s Behavioral Intervention Team.
Dr. Pitcher relocated to Huntsville, Alabama in the Spring of 2012 to join the Alabama A & M University Music Faculty and to direct the Honors Program. Preceding her tenure at AAMU, she was an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Music at York College / City University of New York CUNY) and partnered with the New York City Public School system to recruit and pre-screen teachers. She is certified to teach English as a Second Language (ESL) and has worked with speakers of other languages on English mastery from kindergarten to adult levels.
She earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance from Howard University in
Washington, DC, a Master of Music degree in Opera Theatre from the University of
South Carolina, and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Vocal Performance from
Louisiana State University. She also minored in English and Music History.
Dr. Pitcher is an active member of her community, participating in professional and civic organizations, such as the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and Delta Kappa Gamma International Educators Sorority, Inc. (DKG). She works collaboratively with the Huntsville Dream Center, providing service to the homeless, to young women in transitional housing, and to disabled senior citizens. Volunteerism is especially important to her, and she emphasizes the importance of service to her students.
